If you like knitting and you like the Olympics, you are going to LOVE this blog post. If you also happen to enjoy a passionate love affair with Walthamstow, London – as I do – you may weep with happiness.
I owe this all to a local friend, who alerted me via Twitter. ‘Have you seen the knitted garden in Howard Road?’ she asked. (Thanks, Alessandra!) Seen it? I was out of the front door faster than you can say ‘Olympic Gold Medal’.
I wasn’t sure how I’d spot the house with the knitting. I needn’t have worried…
I knocked on the front door, but no one was in. So I scribbled a note with my contact details and put it through the letter box – I didn’t want to cavort around their garden, without at least trying to ask permission. Then I started cavorting! There were so many yummy photos to take.
HedgeRow-ing, anyone?
Butterfly on the lawn?
Then the lovely nextdoor neighbour came out to take a photo of me with the knitted sport. I’m crouching because she found digital cameras slightly challenging to engage with. How kind of her to take a photo for me, though.
Isn’t this just the best thing you’ve seen in ages? There’s been quite a lot of press coverage, you can read items here and here. I have several friends who either live or have lived on this street, but I’ve never known any of them to make knitted street art. Come on, guys! Get with the programme.
If anyone else wants to knit their own Olympian, Mollie Makes has just released a free knitting pattern for a swimmer. You can find it here.

This… is… AMAZING! I might as well go home now, nothing else can top this today!
So cool! I love all the effort that’s gone into it. You might also like this:

Great post and super pictures! What a huge amount of effort And so pleased it’s dry so people can see the results.
This made me think initially of the knitted Olympics I saw a few weeks back (http://mrsmmakes.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/the-olympics/), but I think this garden setting is better than a shop window. I love it!
I think this is the cutest Olympic (any yard art, really) that I have seen. Love it. Thanks for the photos!
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing! Someday, I am going to get to Walthamstow for a visit. Not sure how, but it is on my bucket list.
The detail! Thanks for sharing
Unbelievable.
The Olympic yarn bomb is back on Saltburn Pier! You can find it via Google – Saltburn (for those who don’t know) is a small seaside town in North East England. The yarn bomb is fantastic really fun and so well done (they also did Jubilee one complete with corgis ), we are off to the seaside tomorrow to look at knitting!!!
Amazing! I bought this ‘knitlympics’ book with patterns for knitting your own Olympians for my nan’s birthday a couple of weeks ago! http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/1843406705/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1343586277&sr=8-1
I kicked myself that I hadn’t learnt to knot yet when I saw it! Very reasonably priced on amazon…
Absolutely brilliant!!!
Brilliant! Just brilliant!
